What Is Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia Surgery)?

Male breast reduction is a cosmetic procedure designed to address gynecomastia, a condition where men experience enlarged breast tissue, leading to significant emotional and physical discomfort. This surgical approach, expertly performed by Dr. Kaweski, aims to remove excess fat and glandular tissue, resulting in a flatter, firmer, more traditionally masculine chest. The benefits of this procedure extend beyond the physical transformation; it also profoundly impacts psychological well-being. By alleviating the source of discomfort and self-consciousness, male breast reduction enables men to engage more confidently in activities and intimacy, freeing them from the previous constraints imposed by their bodies.

How Does Male Breast Reduction Work?

Male breast reduction, meticulously performed by Dr. Kaweski of the Aesthetic Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery in San Diego, is a carefully orchestrated procedure tailored to each patient’s needs, conducted on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. This approach prioritizes patient comfort and safety, ensuring a smooth and efficient process. The surgical technique involves precise incisions made around the areola and perhaps a vertical extension down the lower midsection of the breast. Sometimes it is possible to use tiny incisions in the breast for liposuction of the breast tissue when the tissue is primarily fat.

Through these incisions, Dr. Kaweski skillfully removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin while repositioning the breast and nipple to achieve a more natural, aesthetically pleasing contour. In certain instances, liposuction is also employed to meticulously extract fat cells using a narrow cannula and suction device, further refining chest shape.

After achieving the desired size and positioning, the incisions are carefully sutured closed, marking the end of a transformative journey towards a more confident and comfortable body image.

Benefits of Male Breast Reduction

  • Improved Physical Activity

Enlarged breasts can significantly hinder participation in sports and other physical activities due to discomfort and self-consciousness. Male breast reduction surgery removes this barrier, allowing individuals to engage in physical activities with increased comfort and mobility.

  • Psychological Relief

The psychological distress associated with enlarged breasts, including embarrassment and a lack of self-esteem, can be profound. By addressing the physical aspect of the discomfort, male breast reduction helps alleviate these psychological burdens, leading to improved mental health and well-being.

  • Enhanced Body Image

Many men with gynecomastia resort to wearing baggy shirts and sweatshirts to conceal their condition, which affects their self-image and satisfaction with their body contours. Male breast reduction surgery creates a more traditionally masculine chest appearance, boosting confidence in one’s body image.

  • Increased Self-Confidence

A key benefit of male breast reduction is the significant boost in self-confidence it provides. By resolving the physical cause of discomfort, men often feel more positive about their appearance, which can positively impact various aspects of their lives, including social interactions and professional opportunities.

  • Improved Intimate Relationships

Gynecomastia can place a strain on intimate relationships due to the affected individual’s body image issues and lack of confidence. Male breast reduction surgery can enhance intimate relationships by increasing confidence and comfort with one’s physical appearance, fostering a more positive self-image, and openness in close relationships.

Male Breast Reduction Timeline and Process

  • Consultation

The first step in the male breast reduction process involves a personal consultation with Dr. Kaweski. During this meeting, Dr. Kaweski will assess your condition, discuss your goals, and explain the procedure, including potential outcomes and risks.

  • Preoperative Prep

Before surgery, Dr. Kaweski will provide detailed instructions for preparing, which may include dietary restrictions, medication adjustments, and cessation of smoking. This stage ensures you are physically ready for surgery and minimizes the risk of complications.

  • Surgery Day

On the day of the procedure, you will arrive at the hospital near the Aesthetic Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery, where Dr. Kaweski will perform your procedure under general anesthesia. Surgery typically lasts a few hours, during which excess fat, tissue, and skin are removed, and the chest is contoured for a more masculine appearance.

  • Postoperative Care

Immediately following surgery, you will receive specific care instructions from Dr. Kaweski, including how to manage discomfort and care for your surgical sites. Initial recovery involves rest and limited movement to promote healing.

  • Recovery and Follow-Up Appointments

Recovery time varies, but most patients can return to work and light activities within a week or two, with Dr. Kaweski closely monitoring progress through follow-up appointments. Full recovery and final results may take several weeks to months, during which time any swelling and scarring will gradually diminish.

What’s the First Step?

Before receiving male breast reduction surgery, you must meet with Dr. Kaweski for a private consultation in our office in La Mesa. You will be asked to share your medical history, review your overall health, and discuss your goals and reasons for undergoing the surgery. Be prepared to share your allergies, procedures, and surgeries you’ve had in the past, and if you have any diagnoses.

You’ll then receive a physical examination, in which Dr. Kaweski will take measurements of your chest, check nipple placement, breast shape, skin type, assess how much fat and glandular tissue your breasts have, and take photos for reference. You may also need to complete a blood count and other tests to ensure you’re healthy enough for the procedure.

If you are approved to proceed with the surgery, you will review a surgical plan that outlines the best technique for you, the cost of your treatment, a payment plan, and address any questions or concerns that may arise.

If you’re a smoker, stop smoking at least 1-2 weeks before surgery and while you recover. Smoking will interfere with the healing process and decrease circulation.

What to Expect on the Day of Male Breast Reduction Surgery

Male breast reduction surgery typically lasts between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. Patients are usually discharged from the surgical center in La Mesa on the same day.

Arrive early to your appointment, so you have time to check in and ask any last questions before the procedure begins. You will be given general anesthesia, ensuring the surgery is completely painless while you sleep.

During your surgery, Dr. Kaweski will create an incision in a discrete area, such as your areola or armpit. Your glandular tissue, fat, and skin around the areola will be removed, reshaping your breast to its new form. If your surgery requires a lot of tissue and fat to be removed, the incisions may be in more noticeable areas, as larger incisions will be needed. Depending on the scope of your surgery, liposuction may also be used to remove excess fat using a thin tube called a cannula, which is inserted into the incision.

Patients who have excessive glandular tissue removed may also have excess skin removed to help their skin adapt to the new breast contour.

A small drain is occasionally inserted through a separate incision to remove excess fluid. Incisions are covered with dressings, and your chest will be wrapped to ensure your skin remains in place.

You may gradually return to light exercise after 1-2 weeks, but do not engage in strenuous exercise for a minimum of 4 weeks. You may return to normal activities after four weeks or so.
