| Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)
Indications:
- Ears that sick out too far from the side of the head
Description of Procedure:
- The operation is performed on an outpatient basis under local or general anesthesia.
- The ears are usually bandaged with a cotton dressing that wraps around the head for 1-2 days.
- A small drain from each ear is removed the day after surgery without disturbing the head dressing.
- Initial mild post-operative discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication.
- The procedure is appropriate beginning at age 5 or 6 or at anytime thereafter.
Intended Result:
- Ears that have normal folds and shape with average protrusion from the side of the head.
Recuperation and Healing:
- The ears usually look "normal" within 10-20 days.
- Usually a headband is worn at night to protect the ears for at least one month.
